Is My Child Ready for This Book?
When to Talk About Puberty
Many parents wonder when to begin conversations about puberty and growing up. The good news is that the first conversation does not have to be perfect, nor does it have to cover everything at once.
This book was written especially for children ages 7–10, before or during the early signs of puberty. Your child may be ready if they are beginning to notice changes in their body and in their peers, are asking questions about growing up, or are hearing things from friends or the media.
You do not need to wait until puberty is already underway. In fact, it can be a gift to give children gentle, faithful words before they feel confused, embarrassed, or alone. Ages 7–10 can be a tender window for helping children understand that their bodies are good, growing up is part of God’s design, and they can come to you with questions.
This book is designed to be a first conversation. It gives parents and children a place to begin, with language that is clear, tender, age-appropriate, and rooted in God’s good design for our bodies. The goal is to open a door to communication that your child can walk through again and again.
The Becoming You books do not give detailed information about sex, dating, marriage, or reproduction. That was intentional. I wanted to give children gentle, faithful, age-appropriate language for their changing bodies without making the whole conversation about sex. Parents can add more details as they believe their child is ready, and different families will move at different paces.
A third book, coming next year, will address sex and reproduction more directly, with a broader vision for God’s design for life, love, family, intimacy, and fruitfulness. These puberty books are intentionally designed as a beginning, not the whole conversation.
Some children will be curious. Some will feel shy. Some will ask many questions, and others may say very little at first. All of that is normal.
If your child is beginning to wonder, beginning to change, or simply ready for faithful words before the changes come, this book can help you move toward them with warmth and confidence. It can help them know: my body is not shameful, growing up is not scary, and I can come to my parent with questions.
