There is a kind of leadership that looks gentle on the surface but, over time, leaves harm unaddressed. It avoids confrontation, delays action, and hopes things will improve on their own. Scripture gives us a sobering picture of this in the story of Eli.
Eli was a priest. He knew the Lord and served in the house of God. And yet, under his care, something deeply grievous was happening. His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were abusing their spiritual authority. They took what did not belong to them. They treated the Lord’s offerings with contempt. Most disturbingly, they exploited and violated those who came to worship (1 Sam. 2:12-17, 22).
Eli was aware.
